FAU program
The Program in Italian Studies is a modern, forward-looking program that has found a dignified place in the multicultural and interdisciplinary environment of the college, without losing its own identity and integrity. It has been supported by the notion that the relationship between Italy and its hitherto mostly European literary, cultural, linguistic-philosophical and historical contexts is a horizontal one. In this spirit, and as we cross the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, the Italian program has striven to offer the kinds of courses that reflect Italy as part of the mappa mundi and encourages and integrates course work in other languages and disciplines.

William T. Dyer High School
Il Circolo, the Italian Cultural Society of the Palm Beaches, held its “Welcome Back” meeting at Atlantis Country Club on November 7, 2010. This thirty-fifth reunion was special because among the guests was newly-elected Senator Maria Sachs. Her efforts to gain certification for teachers of Italian in the State of Florida led to success, an endeavor which has long been pursued. In her address to the large crowd, she explained her personal interest since her mother was a war bride from Naples, Italy. Graciously, she suggested to the State Board extending that certification to teachers of all languages which was accepted. This accomplishment is a far cry from what existed before. Just certification for teachers of Latin, German, French and Spanish existed. Il Circolo was proud to recognize Myria Rylee, the first teacher to receive the new certification, whose two classes at William T. Dwyer High School are a testament to the growing interest in the Italian language. Il Circolo donated $2,500 to the program last semester.
Members and guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet organized by Marti Rayl and prepared by a very capable chef and staff. The delectable antipasti filled the beautifully decorated tables, flanked with carved watermelons. As they feasted and drank wine and champagne, Gino DeMarco delighted diners with familiar Italian songs prompting some singing and dancing. This was just the beginning of Il Circolo’s cultural calendar for the season. Check the web site for further events and more information.
